FAQ's - Get to know the NUCUF.
The NUCUF stands for The National Unpaid Carers Union and Forum.
The founder of the NUCUF, Leo left full time employment to become a Full time carer in January 2024 to his mother-in-law.
"shortly after making my claim for carers allowance, I became aware of over 130,000 cases of carers being convicted in court of fraud, due to a fault in communication between carers and the Department for Work and Pensions. I was shocked to see such action being taken against carers who provide free care to either friends or loved ones, and to the benefit of the economy and the NHS. Carers are expected to survive on a benefit that frankly, is an insult to over 5.9 million vulnerable people"
Leo raised a petition on the change.org website which reached over 50,000 signatures, shortly after making the petition known to the Prime Minister, an announcement was made on October 6th 2024, stating there would be a review into carers allowance and the mis-communication between carers and the Department for Work and Pensions.
The National Unpaid Carers Union and Forum aims to become the first ever union for unpaid carers.
On the 6th October 2024 an announcement was made by the Prime Minister, Sir Kier Starmer that he would ensure a complete review into carers allowance, no date has yet been set for when this review will take place, or when a complete report can be expected.
Much like USDAW represents workers in Distribution and Warehousing, and UNISON represent nursing staff, the NUCUF want to represent unpaid carers, allowing unpaid carers to have a voice.
Carers allowance and the carers allowance system has not been reviewed or updated since the original formation of the Invalid Care Allowance (ICA) in 1973. Although the allowance has increased from the 70s budget of just £5.60 per week, not enough is being done to support carers in their roles.
The NUCUF has looked at the current packages of support being offered by local councils, whilst it was not easy to obtain the information we needed, we were able to produce a huge number of factsheets for individuals in their own local authority area. We believe that obtaining the right information from the right place is essential to carers.
Currently there are many organisations campaigning for carers rights, however, the NUCUF will be the first union of its kind to take action.
The National Unpaid Carers Union and Forum is here to support any and all carers who wish to take action against the Government and the Department for Work and Pensions until a remedy to the isolation and financial inequality of carers has been reached.
