A notice of motion is a formal proposal, usually in writing, submitted by a council member. It outlines a particular issue or topic that the member wishes the council to address. The motion may propose a specific action or decision for the council to take regarding the issue.
Actions taken during a Notice of Motion can vary.
Councillors from Brighton and Hove Council will be writing to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care calling on them to urgently address how money from Carers Allowance is treated in relation to Universal Credit,
Change rules around part-time earnings to allow unpaid carers to do more work and remove the ‘cliff-edge’ and to cease all current and future prosecutions of Carers Allowance overpayments.
The document aims to enable currently unpaid carers to be able to be paid as carers for family members and simplify the system for unpaid carers to calculate allowances and expenses, and requests a consultation to assess the needs of unpaid carers locally. The Council also orders a report be brought to a future Health & Wellbeing Board meeting, exploring what the council can do to better support them.
During the meeting, the public gallery will be open for members of the public to see behind the scenes, actions being taken by local councils to address the issues that over 5.9 million unpaid carers across the nation face every day.
